Through the NIEHS ( ) (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences) ARCH (Advanced Research Cooperation in Environmental Health) mechanism, a research program in environmental health sciences has been established at Florida International University, a minority serving institution. During our initial five years of sponsorship (2001-2006), we partnered with the NIEHS Marine and Freshwater Biomedical Sciences Center at the University of Miami. The program was renewed in 2006 with our new partner, the NIEHS NSF ( Center for Oceans and Human Health at the University of Miami. ( A twofold approach, including faculty development and infrastructure development, is used. This program encompasses two research foci; Algal Toxins and Toxic Metals.
