Through the NIEHS (http://www.niehs.nih.gov/ ) (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences) ARCH (Advanced Research Cooperation in Environmental Health) mechanism, a research program in environmental health sciences has been established at Florida International University, a minority serving institution. During our initial five years of sponsorship (2001-2006), we partnered with the NIEHS Marine and Freshwater Biomedical Sciences Center at the University of Miami. The program was renewed in 2006 with our new partner, the NIEHS NSF (http://www.nsf.gov/) Center for Oceans and Human Health at the University of Miami. (http://www.rsmas.miami.edu/groups/ohh/) A twofold approach, including faculty development and infrastructure development, is used. This program encompasses two research foci; Algal Toxins and Toxic Metals.
